 안녕하세요. I am Gabie Choi, author and creator of Learn the K, and this is my story.

I have always been fascinated with languages and culture since I was young. When I was in elementary, I learned and tried to master English. In high school, I got introduced to Korean, Japanese and Chinese through my friends who are fans of anime and drama series.

Out of all the languages that I discovered, I fell in love with Korean. The simple writing system and the sound of its spoken language mesmerized me until this day. So, I decided that I should learn the language and culture.

I started my journey since I was 12 years old, a mere 2nd year high school lad with limited access to language learning materials. Luckily, that didn’t stop me from using the resources I have to start my Korean learning journey. It wasn’t easy and I learned it by myself. My friends were not interested enough to learn the language in-depth with me.

As I continued my journey, I reached a lot of rough roads and bus stops which made me feel like I should not move forward anymore. It was tiring and discouraging. People around me were either unsupportive or uninterested in what I’m doing. I stopped for a couple of months and went back, just to stop for another couple of months and went back again. That was how I started.

After graduating from college, I got more time in my hands to spare for studying, or so I thought. Having a career while learning a language was not easy after all. I went through a lot of struggles, pandemic came, I got 3 major surgeries done before I got the chance to realize my plans.

June 2022, I downloaded an android app to get me started in editing a simple graphic image for my contents, opened a few PDFs from my old files and uploaded lessons on my Facebook page. I was not able to upload daily then, I just posted when I felt like it.

That changed when I started getting engagements from followers who are also fellow learners. Their messages and comments pushed me to work harder and make better contents for the page. That’s when I felt the surge of energy and motivation. I couldn’t end my day without making sure that I have contents ready to upload for the coming days.

Today, I am very happy that I have reached this milestone and I am excited to see where I’ll be in the next few months. I’ve only just started but I feel like I’ve achieved and done so many things already.
